About the Designer:
Even though Kristin aspired to be a fine artist, particularly a painter, her journey into fashion has been nothing but circuitous. Graduating with a BA in English and French minor from the University of Pennsylvania, she ended up in Finance in NY while painting in her spare time. After a number of years she was unfulfilled, she applied to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where she received her MFA in Graphic Design. Upon graduation, she had a graphic design studio with a wide range of clients ranging from small businesses to the State of Pennsylvania. She was simultaneously teaching part time at UCONN, UPENN, Philadelphia University, Rutgers and Tyler School of Art. Around 2007, she launched her T-shirt line “strangefruit” which was a line devoted to using fashion to educate about history. Even though the women’s Tees were successful, she still had an inventory of men’s for which she did not want to waste. Deconstructing and repurposing into women’s tees was the only solution to salvage the remaining tees. This process led to genesis of the first collection of innovative women’s apparel quickly lead her to Project Runway Season 8. “Being casted on the show was validation that I am on the right track in my design path.”
